Radio Naturopath Episode 404: Evaluation of Chest Pain, All About Atherosclerosis
This week, we reminded people to stay hydrated because IT'S HOT OUT THERE. Water, electrolytes, salt, shade, AC, swimming, all good! We moved on to the differential diagnosis of chest pain and how patients are evaluated if they have it. Word to the wise: go straight to the ER. If you're having a heart attack, they are better equipped to treat you if you go to the hospital. It could be just a muscle spasm, but it might be a heart attack or blood clot, which are life threatening. Nobody will think you went unnecessarily! Just go! We then talked about atherosclerosis, what and where it is, and how it's treated conventionally. We'll talk about natural treatments next week.
Radio Naturopath Episode 361: Healthy Hydration, Open Water Swimming for Heath
This week I talked all about hydration, because, you know, heat wave. Fruit juice, whether salt is good for you, varying electrolyte drinks, post-workout hydration, aborting cramps. I also talked about the benefits of open-water swimming, obvious thing to do on a hot summer day!
Radio Naturopath Episode 271: COVID-19 Safety Reminder, Bowel Habits During Travel, Gout
I gave a review of good COVID-19 safety practices, reminding everyone that the way we're still spreading this virus is spending time with too many people in close quarters, especially indoors and without masks. This is not a great time to go to bars or attend parties, and probably not even to eat in restaurants! The virus will die out without hosts, so if we mask, sanitize, limit how many people we come in contact with, and do it in a safe way, the virus will eventually die out. We are by no means there yet, so all those practices still need to be followed.
Ron asked a great question: why do my bowel habits change when I travel? Mostly because of the stress of not being in your own, safe bathroom! Also diet change to some extent, but I think it's mostly that we need to feel safe when we're in the bathroom, and the hotel or highway bathroom doesn't cut it!
I talked about gout: what it is, where it tends to occur, how to eat and drink to prevent it, and some meds and supplements that are used.
Radio Naturopath Episode 220: More Hydration in the Heat; The Latest on Lyme
It's July 10, so that means that my sister Nancy turns 52, Playing Card Year! She'll get a pack in purple, her favorite color, and I'm wearing it today.
It was 90 degrees on this day, so I talked about hydration. Good ol' coconut water, trace minerals, salt, plain old water, sport drinks. Also taking cayenne or other hot stuff or pickle juice to abort cramps! It's a good thing to repeat.
Ron has Lyme Disease so we're trying to figure out what will help him kick it for good. He got his antibiotic changed after 7 weeks of the standby, doxycycline, to cefprozil, a cephalosporin. Meanwhile, he's taking a bunch of other things: Samento and Banderol to kill the spirochete in all its forms; resveratrol; adaptogenic herbs for his adrenals; oregano oil; humic and fulvic acid to bind toxins; and silver nanoparticles to further kill the organism, both internally and topically on his swollen knee! It's taking way too long but we're working on it.
Radio Naturopath Episode 217: Help for Bladder Stones; Concerns with Blood Pressure Meds, Anti-Depressants, and Statins
I answered a caller question about what to do about bladder stones (saw palmetto, hydrangea, corn silk, Stone Breaker, WATER). I also talked about cautions and caveats with taking high blood pressure meds, anti-depressants, and statins for cholesterol. In the right time and dose they can be helpful, but often they are not prescribed that way!
Radio Naturopath Episode 209: Natural Hormone Delivery Methods; Water: Why Hydrotherapy is Good For You
As promised, I talked about delivery systems for natural hormone replacement therapy. Some things are best as topical creams, some are OK as pills, some are good as sublingual oils, some should go right on the spot they're needed!
Also, while in Washington and Oregon, I went to two kinds of natural hydrotherapy! I went to Carson Hot Springs, where I got a bath in some lovely, hot mineral water, followed by a nice wrap. Then, I went to Multnomah Falls and and got splashed with a big cascade waterfall! That way, I got my negative ions, great for reducing inflammation. I talked about the different kinds of hydrotherapy, from constitutional to sitz baths, alternating hot and cold to foot baths, and much more! Easy stuff you can do with water right at home!
Radio Naturopath Episode 201: New Blood Test for Alzheimer's Plus Natural Treatments; Get Rid Of That 4 Week Cough and Cold
I was inspired today by none other than Maria Shriver on the Today Show, who talked about a new blood test for Alzheimer's disease. She didn't go into as much detail as the article I found, so when I looked it up I found that it's the NFL test. Very appropriate for the upcoming sporting events! But it stands for NeuroFilament Light chains. I went to look in Quest Diagnostics where I order my labs, and it's not offered there. There's definitely a couple of companies that do it but I don't know if I have access to them. Quanterix does it but I don't know who has access to it. Anyway, it's a breakdown product of neuronal tissue. The more you have, the more likely you are to have brain neurodegeneration! If you have the genetic, early onset Alzheimer's, your levels will rise over time. If you have the non-genetic, they'll stay about the same. There are natural ways to head off the development of Alzheimer's, so I went through a bunch of them. One of them is EAT YOUR COCONUT OIL. It makes you smart!
Also, so many people have that cold or cough that just won't go away, so I gave out advice to help with that. Eucalyptus! Echinacea and goldenseal! Vitamins A, C, E, Zinc! Thin your mucus with guaifenesin, NAC, and bromelain!
Radio Naturopath Episode 160: Ow My Aching Back: Natural Help for Back Pain!
Today I discussed back pain. Ow! Why it happens, and how, and the different conditions that cause it. I talked about core exercises that I do to prevent it. Also ergonomics in the office. And great supplements! Magnesium, esterified fatty acids, fish oil, collagen, curcumin, ginger, bromelain. Also, making sure to stay hydrated! That can help ANY muscle pain. And don't forget the hands-on practitioners: chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist, physical therapist! NOTHING like good physical medicine.
Radio Naturopath Episode 145: Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling!
Traveling can pose some challenges to your health. Planes have recirculated air and people cough and sneeze in them! There's awesome health habits, like taking herbal sprays, elder liquid or lozenges, cleansing the nose and throat, sleeping, and drinking water, and much more! Stay healthy so you can enjoy what's on the other end of that journey!
Radio Naturopath Episode 133: Sun Rash, Sunscreen, Prickly Heat, Magnesium, Muscle Soreness
We talked about help from getting a sun-induced rash, and nontoxic sunscreen, beta carotene and other antioxidants to prevent. Also, prickly heat! Plus a shout out to nettles for allergies. Magnesium, the Magic Mineral. And, how to be less sore! Water, stretching, rest are great for starters!
