Radio Naturopath Episode 153: Happy New Year! Easy and Hard: How to Periodize in your Workout and Life; Success/Failure vs. Life as a Practice/Journey

We started off talking about the myriad of weight loss programs being advertised in every form of media: social, TV, radio of all kinds, even that old school deal, print! And how weight is a pressing issue in the US because >70% people have a BMI that puts them into that category. Before we had a chance to review programs and what works and what doesn't, I talked about my main new year's resolutions. One: Periodization. In my workouts, having hard days followed by easy days; respecting what I've done by harmonizing it with what I do next. I also hope to strive to do this in my everyday life: pair hard workdays with good quality rest, and also having down time that is just for me to recharge. I also talked about focusing in life on Practice instead of Success/Failure; instead of seeing something that doesn't come out the way you want as a failure, simply troubleshoot, fine tune and continue the journey! If you're not afraid of failure you're more likely to try and do more stuff. I also want to REALLY PRACTICE letting other people be who they are.

Radio Naturopath Episode 152: Natural Medicine at the Drugstore; Staying Healthy in the Cold; Itchy Eyes

I took a little jaunt to the local drugstore and see what they had for herbal medicine. I found some nuggets: you DON'T have to get Vic's Vapo Rub which has PETROLEUM JELLY in it; there's a couple of brands which have shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil in them, and no petroleum products! Also, I found shower tabs that fizz on your shower floor and smell like eucalyptus. And natural honey cough syrup, which works better than many pharmaceutical compounds! Speaking of which, guaifenesin tabs and liquids without other stuff in it are fine, as long as the only active ingredient is guaifenesin. It's a natural mucus thinner! Also, I read the Town of Mansfield's advisory about the cold, where the warming centers are, and their advice on staying warm. And I answered a call for help with itchy eyes! Whatever you put in them, make sure it's STERILE, although eyebright and black teabags don't necessarily have to be.

Radio Naturopath Episode 151: Hurray for Jones, Remembering Myron Storch, Flu Vaccine Only Gives 10% Protection??

Today's Radio Naturopath did a Hurray for Justice since we have No Moore and Yes Jones in Alabama. I also remembered my father a bit, since this is the first anniversary of his death on December 13, 2016, and a little about grief. Then I went on to rant about the 10% success rate of the flu vaccine, and reminded people that if they get a vaccination, it doesn't just give them a pass to be cavalier about catching stuff. You still have to neti, gargle, take elder, exercise, rest, and eat your veggies!

Radio Naturopath Episode 149: Melatonin, Meningitis, Forskolin and Weight Loss, Eat the Peel, More Cold and Flu Prevention

This week was kind of a hodgepodge. We answered some listener's questions and went down roads they took us. Is sublingual melatonin helpful for sleep? How is meningitis spread? If you drop a forskolin capsule in organic apple cider vinegar, will it help you lose weight? Can you eat orange and banana peels, and are they good for you? Turns out, orange peels are great for reducing respiratory inflammation, and bananas are nutritional powerhouses, full of fiber, vitamins B12 and B6, plus potassium and magnesium! Plus once again, we review cold and flu prevention and treatment. Alwyas a great topic this time of year!

Radio Naturopath Episode 148: Kennedy Assassination, Sexual Harrassment, Healthy Thanksgiving

We talked a little about the Kennedy Assassination, since November 22, 2017 is the 54th anniversary. Followed by the 54th anniversary of ME November 28! Ron remembers where he was, and I was very soon to greet the world! I came out to say hello 6 days later. Mom remembers the kids getting on the bus in tears, while returning from a PRENATAL VISIT. Because of me! Then we got into the revelations of all the prominent guys engaging in sexual harrassment and predation. We came to the conclusion that it's not just about preventing it in the moment, but in educating boys and men about how and why not to do it in the first place. Since it's so prevalent, there's a message that it's something that men can do, or they're not being educated NOT to. So, that's where the change comes, from education! We talked about the possibility of schools, corporate education, of on line content, and even public service messages.

Then, I got into a bit about how to make Thanksgiving healthier. One approach is: it's one meal, have at it! But also, since you're going to be with family and friends, why not include some fun physical activities? Walks, hikes, scavenger hunts, football, tag, frisbee, dancing, you name it! Turkey Trots for those inclined! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Radio Naturopath Episode 146: NHAND Conference Redux: Detoxification, Fatty Liver, Sleep Apnea, Hormesis, Alcoholism and Depression, Lyme Disease

I just came back from the New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors conference. Can you say Information Overload? Here's some great nuggets! Get help for constipation, because you can otherwise reabsorb toxins, like pesiticides! Sleep apnea is NO GOOD. Not only can it increase chances of stroke and heart attack, but it lowers testosterone, leading to no sex drive, reduced muscle mass, and weight gain! It's important to address biotoxins, by reducing them in the community and by assisting personal everyday detox. Some people drink alcohol because they're genetically predisposed to it making them happier! For these folks, gamma linolenic acid, like in evening primrose oil, can help. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise; if it finally leads to an inflamed liver, it can lead to liver cancer! So, reduce that starch and sugar, and get exercise. Hormesis: a little is good, there's a sweet spot, and then too much is no good. The biphasic nature of dosing any compound! And the highest mortality from Lyme disease is suicide. People feel desperate, frustrated, and misunderstood. Let's get some understanding and support for people facing chronic Lyme!

I have become aware that there is a high incidence of cancer and death among firefighters, and that most of the firefighters and construction crew that worked on the World Trade Center after 9/11 are ill or deceased.
