Radio Naturopath Episode 482: More on the Measles Outbreak, Daylight Savings Time: Can We Not?
This was the first week I'd actually BEEN to the Know Your Farmer's Fair so that I could talk about it! A great time was had by all, from getting SO many coasters, to mushroom salt and jerky, to gluten free cookies, to giving Congressman Joe Courtney a hug! Ron got to schmooze the room in his role as co-director of the Mansfield Farm to Families program, and talk to Joe as the registrar of voters for the Town of Mansfield!
Today I talked more about the measles outbreak, and how we shouldn't be so hard on RFKJr. I explained the science behind his offering of vitamin A, cod liver oil, and antibiotics to folks in the outbreak. I also talked about the recent time change to Daylight Savings Time and why we, well, just shouldn't. It's not good for your health!
Radio Naturopath Episode 477: Valentine's Day: Chocolate for Health, Home-Cooked Valentine's Day
It's almost Valentine's Day, which is also Ron and my 20th anniversary! 20 years, can you believe it? 20 years of chocolate, bicycles, love, support and healing. And also, food. We talk about appreciating each other! Then, of course, since it's valentines day, I talked about the health benefits of chocolate, a yearly tradition. I also gave some healthy alternatives to going out to eat on Valentine's Day, like making dishes at home with heart healthy omega 3s, and lots of produce.
Radio Naturopath Episode 469: Happy ThanksBirthday to Me, Seasonal Affective Disorder
This week, I talked about how we BAILED from the Manchester Road Race, because Ron's circulation and leg pain and the chilly, pouring rain would have made it too uncomfortable. We may return to Manchester to walk the course on a sunnier day! And soon we'll have some diagnosis as to what's going on with Ron's health and get him back to walking, running, and mostly importantly, CYCLING!
Also, it was all about Hello Darkness My Old Friend, the sun is setting at 4 PM. All about seasonal affective disorder! What it is, the neurotransmitters involved, and what vitamins and supplements can be helpful. And don't forget the light box, dawn simulators, and just plain getting outside! Basic healthy lifestyle stuff can help too.
Radio Naturopath Episode 419: Long COVID and Low Serotonin, Weight Loss Surgery
This week, I talked about a study that came out suggesting that people with long COVID may have viral remnants, or even actual virus, in their guts, and this is preventing them from making adequate serotonin. Inadequate serotonin leads to mood disorders, poor digestion, pain, migraines, and all sorts of other issues! i suggested some naturopathic fixes for this.
Then we started on weight loss topics. beginning with the nature and effects of weight loss surgery. I'd rather people didn't do it but sometimes it can be a good choice!
Radio Naturopath Episode 415: Health Benefits of the Outdoors, the Beach, and Vitamin D
This week I talked about how it's helpful to get away to Florida. We also talked about specific health benefits of both being outdoors and the beach, which are similar. You breathe better, improve neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, have better mood and sleep, and more! We also talked about the heatlh benefits of vitamin D.
Radio Naturopath Episode 382: Help for Seasonal Affective Disorder, Embrace the Darkness
So, of course, the topic of the week is Seasonal Affective Disorder, since those who suffer, probably are right now. We talked about diagnosis, possible medications, melatonin, exercise, and lightbox therapy. We also talked about embracing the season, like the Danish tradition of Hygge, hunkering down and getting cozy! I've been doing plenty of that. We also talked about why it's important to actually embrace darkness, the ways that it's good for your health.
Radio Naturopath Episode 319: Migraines: Ocular, Common, Classic, and Help for Prevention and Treatment
This week, I talked about migraines, how they happen, what meds get used, how to help to prevent them and how natural medicine and lifestyle fits in. I'm so lucky, I had an ocular migraine that sent me to the ER thinking I had a stroke! But I didn't, I got diagnosed with ocular migraine. So, more rest, more hydration, more beach and nature, less sugar.
Radio Naturopath Episode 270: Notes on the Amish, Help for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Ron and I went to Pennsylvania Dutch Country! It was really interesting to learn that there are about 40,000 Amish in greater Lancaster County, PA, the difference between Amish and Mennonite, that church is in each other's homes, and that they DO use electricity as long as it's not attached to the grid. Some still have ancient coal stoves, but coal is very expensive, so many have gas-powered stoves and refrigerators, and air compressor powered small appliances. Some are so newfangled that they're getting solar panels! Apparently church is on alternate weeks, so we saw TONS OF BUGGIES on the road, and late in the day we saw young folks in buggies a-courtin'! We knew this because the boys had no facial air and the girls had white pinafores. We learned all this stuff at the museum of the Amish Village! https://www.amishvillage.com/ I also ate whoopie pies and shoo-fly pie and went to the DUTCH HAVEN! https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tZP1zcsSY9Pjy80M2C0UjWosLBMNjO2NEtJTEqzTEuzMLUyqDA3szBISUxOSjYzTUpOTTH04k4pLUnOUMhILEvNAwB3nBQD&q=dutch+haven&oq=DUTCH+HAVEN&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j0j46j0l3j46j0.4987j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 I think my parents took me there when I was a kid.
This week's big topic was IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME. I thought lots of people would appreciate the topic; somewhere between 3-20% of my listeners. All about what it is and isn't, and how it's usually some combination of stress, anxiety/depression, and eating foods that just don't work for you. We talked about some meds ,and more supplements that can help.
Radio Naturopath Episode 253: Melatonin, Sleep and Coronavirus; Why Daylight Savings Time is Bad for You; Eat Your Veggies!
This week, I focused on sleep and melatonin. I talked about why they're helpful for fighting off the coronavirus, and how to get better sleep, including some supplements and herbs. I also talked about why daylight savings time is bad for you! Another good reason to live in Arizona. Also, remember to eat your leafy greens!
Radio Naturopath Episode 238: Get Better Sleep; Prenatal Nutrition Points
This week (snork) I discussed (blink, shake head) how to get good SLEEP. Rhea Abbott, N.D. gave a great talk about it at the NHAND conference, and I expanded upon some of her ideas. Melatonin, magnesium, nervine herbs like California poppy, chamomile, passion flower, hops, lemon balm, and 5HTP, the precursor to serotonin! But the MAIN thing is sleep hygiene, setting up your sleep space and yourself to optimize sleep. I also discussed a few tidbits of prenatal nutrition information.
