Radio Naturopath Episode 355: Why You Sleep Too Much, All About Bursitis
We had a question about hypersomnia, that is, when you consistently sleep in excess of 9 hours, and you're still tired. Many conditions cause this, from sleep apnea to hypothyroid to nutrient deficiencies. We tackle them all! Then, we talked in depth about bursitis, a condition that affects nearly 9 million people in the USA. It's the inflammation of the tissues of the sacs surrounding joints. It's treatable but it takes some care!
Radio Naturopath Episode 298: Happy Spring! More Women's History, Sleep Better During the Pandemic
Today we welcomed in Spring and encouraged people to enjoy it.
It's still Women's History Month, so today we honored a former teacher and researcher in naturopathic medicine, Anna MacIntosh, Ph.D., N.D. There is a research scholarship named for her. She managed to make physiology, nutrition, and biochemistry interesting and fun!
I also honored Mayim Bialik. Ph.D., who has a great podcast, Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, in which she discussed mental health and some neuroscience, which is her background.
The main topic of the day: getting better sleep during the pandemic! Stressors of all kinds are high right now, and that leads to issues that affect sleep. We talk about some healthy habits that can help you to sleep better despite the pandemic.
Radio Naturopath Episode 238: Get Better Sleep; Prenatal Nutrition Points
This week (snork) I discussed (blink, shake head) how to get good SLEEP. Rhea Abbott, N.D. gave a great talk about it at the NHAND conference, and I expanded upon some of her ideas. Melatonin, magnesium, nervine herbs like California poppy, chamomile, passion flower, hops, lemon balm, and 5HTP, the precursor to serotonin! But the MAIN thing is sleep hygiene, setting up your sleep space and yourself to optimize sleep. I also discussed a few tidbits of prenatal nutrition information.
Radio Naturopath Episode 146: NHAND Conference Redux: Detoxification, Fatty Liver, Sleep Apnea, Hormesis, Alcoholism and Depression, Lyme Disease
I just came back from the New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors conference. Can you say Information Overload? Here's some great nuggets! Get help for constipation, because you can otherwise reabsorb toxins, like pesiticides! Sleep apnea is NO GOOD. Not only can it increase chances of stroke and heart attack, but it lowers testosterone, leading to no sex drive, reduced muscle mass, and weight gain! It's important to address biotoxins, by reducing them in the community and by assisting personal everyday detox. Some people drink alcohol because they're genetically predisposed to it making them happier! For these folks, gamma linolenic acid, like in evening primrose oil, can help. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise; if it finally leads to an inflamed liver, it can lead to liver cancer! So, reduce that starch and sugar, and get exercise. Hormesis: a little is good, there's a sweet spot, and then too much is no good. The biphasic nature of dosing any compound! And the highest mortality from Lyme disease is suicide. People feel desperate, frustrated, and misunderstood. Let's get some understanding and support for people facing chronic Lyme!
