Radio Naturopath Episode 284: Happy Hanukkah! COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout, New Drugs and Natural Treatments; NrF2 Enhancers
This week, there's great excitement over the initial rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination by Pfizer. We talked about the rollout, how it works, who is likely to be in line for it, and what it may contain. More info on that next week!
I also talked about some meds and natural treatments for COVID-19 as presented by Heather Zwickey, PhD, microbiologist and infectious disease researcher. Then a bit about NrF2 and its wonderful antioxidant properties.
Radio Naturopath Episode 248: The Latest on Coronavirus; Elderberry for Nerve Pain, Cinnamon and Ginger for Diabetes and Inflammation
The 2020 Coronavirus outbreak is not only historic in its scope, but in the response to it. I’ve never seen such an intense global response to an illness. Conferences, sporting events, concerts, public events canceled. Universities and schools shutting down for the semester. People being encouraged to practice social distancing, stay home more, only go to the doctor if it’s a real emergency, change travel plans. Businesses being affected, including my own. And the big question: how long will we be in this status? We try to sort through the info glut for some basic practical information.
Also, elderberry is good for nerve pain, ginger for inflammation, and cinnamon for diabetes!
Radio Naturopath Episode 225: Gun Violence as a Public Health Crisis, Again
We had a good talk about the contagion of gun violence, how it's a health hazard and a public health issue, how nutritional status can affect the likelihood of people to be violent. Also, statistics for gun violence in other countries. Important, sad, sobering.
Radio Naturopath Episode 220: More Hydration in the Heat; The Latest on Lyme
It's July 10, so that means that my sister Nancy turns 52, Playing Card Year! She'll get a pack in purple, her favorite color, and I'm wearing it today.
It was 90 degrees on this day, so I talked about hydration. Good ol' coconut water, trace minerals, salt, plain old water, sport drinks. Also taking cayenne or other hot stuff or pickle juice to abort cramps! It's a good thing to repeat.
Ron has Lyme Disease so we're trying to figure out what will help him kick it for good. He got his antibiotic changed after 7 weeks of the standby, doxycycline, to cefprozil, a cephalosporin. Meanwhile, he's taking a bunch of other things: Samento and Banderol to kill the spirochete in all its forms; resveratrol; adaptogenic herbs for his adrenals; oregano oil; humic and fulvic acid to bind toxins; and silver nanoparticles to further kill the organism, both internally and topically on his swollen knee! It's taking way too long but we're working on it.
Radio Naturopath Episode 216: Interview with Kurt Beil, N.D.: The Science on How the Outdoors Can Heal You!
Today I welcomed Kurt Beil, N.D., who practices in the Hudson Valley of New York and in Ridgefield, CT. His passion and area of research is in The Healing Power of Nature, our basic principle, specifically as it relates to being outdoors! He has done research on how being in nature lowers blood pressure, improves children's vision, reduces stress, and improves hormonal function. Who knew, it's scientifically better for you to be outdoors!
Radio Naturopath Episode 204: Interview with Karl Goldkamp, N.D.: Healing Crohn's/Ulcerative Colitis with the Ketogenic Diet
This is the story of Karl Goldkamp, N.D., a naturopathic physician, who had some personal tragedies in his life. In short order, his beloved brother, who he supported with natural medicine, finally died of mutliple myeloma. His mother also passed. And his wife was found to have a benign brain tumor. That and the bankruptcy of his Connecticut business led him to severe stress, and an extremely severe case of Crohn's/ulcerative colitis. He tried conventional therapy and that didn't work. While feeling better after a blood transfusion, he sought out answers, and decided to do FMT, fecal microbiota transfer. The donor was his wife! (She recovered from her brain tumor.) This held off the acute symptoms. Then he researched and went to conferences, and learned all about the ketogenic diet. When he started eating this way, his Crohns/colitis completely resolved, and he has no signs or symptoms to this day. He and his wife Judy are mostly carnivores; most days they eat only animal protein, like steak, bacon and eggs, and they have homemade mayonnaise, and very small amounts of vegetables in relish form. They have also come up with a C8 fatty acid, C8-Keto, which is ketogenic friendly and an energizing source of fat. Karl now counsels people on the application of the ketogenic diet for health. Karl also engages in high intensity interval training and feels more fit and healthy than he did in his 20's!
Radio Naturopath Episode 196: Erectile Dysfunction: Cardiovascular and Hormones Naturally
Here are the facts about erectile dysfunction and improving sexual health for men. Of course, I talk about improving cardiovascular health with diet, exercise and stress reduction, and improving hormonal health in the same way. There are some supplements and herbs that can be helpful. But it's like a lot of things, diet, exercise, and stress reduction!
Radio Naturopath Episode 193: COPD and CRPD: Help Your Lungs; Thanksgiving Foods That Are Good For You!
RND 193 is about COPD and CRPD, chronic obstructive and restrictive pulmonary disease. We discuss what they are and how to help, but it's not easy. They come as the result of years of lung injury, from smoking, poor air quality, industrial exposures, and/or genetics. There are some natural medicines that can help.
And, 6 Thanksgiving foods that are good for you and why! Turkey, cranberries, green beans, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, apples.
Radio Naturopath Episode 185: Pros and Cons of Naturopathic Medicine; Dizziness and Vertigo: Why? How to Treat
I discuss the pros and cons of seeing a naturopathic physician. What's so great about us, anyway? Lots! We spend time with you, get to know you as a person, are very creative about helping you heal as an individual. We take a more holistic approach to all of your health concerns, including your pharmaceuticals. We are extensively trained in many kinds of natural medicine, including herbs, homeopathy, and nutrition. So what could be bad? Well, in Connecticut we can't be your PCP or prescribe and manage your pharmaceuticals. That's because of our very old, arcane law that has not been modernized since its enactment in 1923. We're still working on it! Talk to your state representative!
Also, we talk about DIZZINESS. What is it, really? What are some direct causes? How can we treat it? Dizziness can be really minor, really serious, and somewhere in between! But, hit that gingko and ginger and they can help!
Radio Naturopath Episode 180: Removing Obstacles to Cure, The Healing of the Knee, and MENOPAUSE: HOT FLASH REDUX
This week: we talk about Removing Obstacles to Cure! An important naturopathic principle. Why give you tummy tonics when what you really need to do is simply stop eating dairy? Removing those obstacles can be hard if they're very habitual, but well worth considering and of course, doing. We celebrate the Healing of the Knee, my right one, and how it happened. Ron thinks the most important element was Patience, that I didn't return to pushing too hard with exercise too soon. And all the other stuff, like acupuncture and chiropractic! And, for we menopausal women, a review of how to get less of those pesky hot flashes. Soy is OK! So is evening primrose oil and black cohosh.
