Radio Naturopath Episode 442: Muscle Repair, Hypertension, Respiratory Allergies
This week, we found that Ron is plugging along and had a not-so-good day because yesterday he dared to work in the yard. His poor muscles just don't want to be disturbed! We are hoping that this will just take time and he'll be back to his favorite activities soon. As for me, my tremors have been quiet, and I'm hoping that's in part due to the low dose lithium orotate, and that the herbs are working to clear any remnants of tick borne illness! However, I have to face that I have hereditary hypertension. All the supplements and stress-reducing activities are just not working to get my blood pressure into a safe zone. So, I'm going to try a low dose of an angiotensin receptor blocker. My mom and sister are both on blood pressure meds and they work well for them. My mom is also on an ARB but my sister is on a pair of diurectics. I am taking an ARB because they are safer for athletes, in that they don't dehydrate you nor reduce your cardiac output. More about hypertension next week!
It's SPRING, and that means beautiful flowers, trees, and POLLEN! So we did a nice review of what to do for your respiratory allergies. Neti pots, supplements, nasal sprays, foods, we've got it all!
Radio Naturopath Episode 388: Help for Early Allergy Season 2023!
BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH! Cuz on this one, you may have allergy symptoms! It was such a mild winter that the trees are starting to bloom. So, we talked all about the early blooming trees, keeping the pollen off your body and out of your nose, and all sorts of remedies to help with seasonal allergies! Quercetin, nettles, eyebright, Vitamin C, you name it!
Radio Naturopath Episode 349: Natural Help for Spring Allergies 2022
Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you! This week I talked about something that I don't even know if the 4th can help: respiratory allergies! I've been watching Ron sniffle and snort and get headaches and test negative repeatedly for COVID-19. I thought it was time to talk about healthy nasal sprays, neti pots, healthy eating, rest and restorative activities, indoor hygiene like HEPA filters and washing the bedding! WEIRDEST SUPPLEMENT: Quail egg extract! You can take it in a chewable for acute symptoms. Trypsin inhibitor extraordinaire, and great for symptoms!
Radio Naturopath Episode 300: High Intensity Interval Training, Respiratory Allergies 2021
In our continuing quest to inform about exercise, we talked about how high intensity interval training can be helpful. It can increase fat burning during and after exercise, improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, increase muscle mass, and burn visceral fat. It doesn't have to take a long time, so it's very effiicent! Anyone can do it if they find an intensity level that works for them.
The pollen is flying, so we did a review of respiratory allergies and how to help them. It's time for neti-pots, salt water, bioflavonoids, nettles, and lots of other natural help. Next (live) week we'll talk about asthma!
Radio Naturopath Episode 278: Happy Halloween! COVID-19 Uptick in CT; Is It Allergies Or Is It COVID-19?
I talked a little about having a safer Halloween. I reminded people that sadly, there is an uptick in COVID-19 cases all over the country, even in Connecticut, although it's not as severe here as in the Midwest. I listed the 11 towns that are now considered hot spots, many in eastern CT, and one of them is WINDHAM, but not Mansfield, thankfully. The main topic was Is It Allergies or Is It COVID-19? Many people have fall allergies, and currently those are mostly dust and mold. There's really not much pollen to be had right now, so people are sneezing from being indoors, breathing in the dust and mold that was sitting in their heating ducts and is now blowing out, mold from interaction with firewood, and dust from putting on jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts that have been sitting since April. Wash 'em! Use a HEPA filter! I gave a lot of good suggestions.
Radio Naturopath Episode 210: Allergy Reminder; Interview with Kurt Beil, N.D., The Outdoors and Your Health!
And, it's time for Radio Naturopath Episode 210! My friend and colleague, Kurt Beil, N.D. called in. He is a naturopathic doctor practicing in Westchester County, NY, and Western Connecticut. He focuses on helping people to get outside, and has studied and published on the health benefits of being outside in nature! Who woulda guessed, getting outside is good for your health! We talked about how there are studies on being outdoors and reducing cortisol and blood pressure. Also, Earth Day is Monday, and we talked about enjoying and being a good steward to Mother Earth. Dr. Kurt will be back on June 5 LIVE to get more geeky about why outside is great!
I also gave a quick reminder on allergy care, since the pollen count is so high.
Radio Naturopath Episode 208: Help Allergies with Herbs; Guide to Bioidentical Hormones for Menopause
It’s time for SPRING! This week I reminded people that if they are sneezing, there IS tree pollen in the air, and they might want to break out the neti pots and xylitol nasal spray. And drink nettle and eyebright tea, and eat local honey!
The main topic was bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms. If you've tried the natural stuff and it just wasn't working, it might be time to try bioidentical hormones. I talk about the difference between horse-extracted, synthetic, and bioidentical hormones, and why it's better to go bioidentical. I also talk about which hormones to take and where, whether it's testosterone for sex drive, topical estrogen cream, or oral for everywhere. In 2 weeks I'll review delivery systems.
Radio Naturopath Episode 152: Natural Medicine at the Drugstore; Staying Healthy in the Cold; Itchy Eyes
I took a little jaunt to the local drugstore and see what they had for herbal medicine. I found some nuggets: you DON'T have to get Vic's Vapo Rub which has PETROLEUM JELLY in it; there's a couple of brands which have shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil in them, and no petroleum products! Also, I found shower tabs that fizz on your shower floor and smell like eucalyptus. And natural honey cough syrup, which works better than many pharmaceutical compounds! Speaking of which, guaifenesin tabs and liquids without other stuff in it are fine, as long as the only active ingredient is guaifenesin. It's a natural mucus thinner! Also, I read the Town of Mansfield's advisory about the cold, where the warming centers are, and their advice on staying warm. And I answered a call for help with itchy eyes! Whatever you put in them, make sure it's STERILE, although eyebright and black teabags don't necessarily have to be.
