Radio Naturopath Episode 401: Vaginal Dryness, Tick Repellent, Heart Healthy Foods
This week I talked about three topics. The first is one especially important to peri- and post-menopausal women, vaginal dryness. There are some simple things you can do to help, and not necessarily hormonal! The second is TICKS. My patients are coming in with tick bites and frank Lyme disease. We discuss how to prevent getting them on you, how to look for them, and natural tick repellents. The third is a long list of heart healthy foods! Lots of things that you can eat and generally help your heart to be healthier, and some that are actually studied to do great things like lower LDL, increase LDL size, raise HDL, lower triglycerides, improve endothelial function, and lower blood pressure.
Radio Naturopath Episode 360: Blueberries, Sunflowers and Health; Phytosomes For High Absorption
We went to Buttonwood Farms to see the sunflowers, and so I talked about the health benefits of sunflower seeds and oil. They can be made into phosphatides that help with cellular healing, including liver cells and biliary flow. The phosphatides can also help with memory and cognition. I remind you not to eat rancid oil, and explain what it is and how to tell. And we went blueberry picking, so reminders of why blueberries are so good for you!
Radio Naturopath Episode 321: Dietary Fats and Your Health
This week I talked about fats. Essential fatty acids, saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsatured, medium chain triglycerides. Certain fats are really good for your health, and certain fats really aren't. You need to eat healthy fats for cellular and body structure and to prevent inflammation. We talk about the different kinds of fats and where they're found in your food.
We also started with an update on Ron and his health, and how reducing his dose of metoprolol helped him to feel better.
Radio Naturopath Episode 307: Statins: Pros and Cons, More Natural Help for Cardiovascular Disease
This week we have more discussion of cardiovascular health. We touch on how statins actually help to lower cardiovascular risk, but also the problems associated with them. We also suggest ways to mitigate these problems. We talk about supplements that help with healthy blood vessels and to keep plaque at bay. We also list some foods that can help with your heart health.
Radio Naturopath Episode 247: Yet More Coronavirus, Heart Healthy Foods
This week we reviewed the wonderful Know Your Farmer Fair, where I got a great pair of alpaca wool gloves, some fire cider, and a horse hair bracelet. We got to talk with local farmers about their wares! Ron and I both had a great time.
I talked YET MORE about the coronavirus, elaborated on herbs for different purposes: ginger and turmeric to reduce inflammation, marshmallow root, elecampane and mullein to stop viruses from sticking to mucous membranes, echinacea, mushrooms, and eleuthero to support the immune system. We also talked about whether you need masks, washing your hands, and resting. We just have to see what happens as more people contract the virus, or if efforts at containment are successful.
I also talked about great heart healthy foods! Walnuts, olives and their monounsaturated fats; berries and cherries and anthocyanins; and COCOA FLAVONOLS. Yum!
Radio Naturopath Episode 176: Doctor as Teacher. Macadamia Nuts, Gamma Linolenic Acid
I talked about the health benefits of macadamia nuts, and they are surprisingly healthy! Bioflavonoids, antioxidants, high levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, and they help with weight loss too! And they are, of course, VEGAN. And the oil is great for sauteeing! The Doctor as Teacher is a really important concept, educating patients about their health as well directing them as to what to do. And how that great essential fat, gamma linolenic acid, can help you!
